Overview
Pearl millet, commonly known as Bajra, is the sixth major cereal crop in India, known for its high drought tolerance. It is extensively cultivated in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. Pearl millet can yield well under low management conditions and high fertility when hybrids are grown.
Growth and Characteristics
Pearl millet grows between 6 to 15 feet tall, producing dense spike-like panicles. The grains, which are rich in nutrients, vary in color from nearly white to purple. Pearl millet thrives under marginal conditions but can yield up to 4-5 tonnes per hectare under optimal conditions.
Health Benefits
Pearl millet is high in protein, fiber, phosphorous, magnesium, and iron. It aids in managing diabetes, reducing cholesterol levels, and improving digestion. Its rich nutrient composition supports heart health, bone strength, and overall metabolic function.
